A friend of mine recently posted on her Facebook wall that she was giving herself a “timeout” and I loved it. What a novel concept. I talk a lot about presence and dedication to your yoga practice, but sometimes that means recognizing when you need a break. As Westerners, we are inherently goal oriented. Despite our best efforts, even as yogis, we rarely give ourselves a break.
It’s easy to get caught up in routine to the point that it becomes, well, routine. If you find yourself thinking, “God, I have to get up and do yoga today,” STOP. Your mind and body may be telling you that you need a break, today you need rest.
Readjust your perspective, too. Try to see your practice as an opportunity to let go, escape your mind, instead of your practice being another contributor to your mental noise. But, if you still need a break, and your body could really use that extra two hours of sleep, give in to your own needs.
The mat will be waiting for you tomorrow. And when you get there, unfurl it, sit on it and just be. See what arises from within, even if it’s just lying back into Savasana.
Namaste.
