There is always, always something to be thankful for

today i am thankful

It often takes a brush with mortality– your own or someone you love’s– to remember all that we have to be thankful for.  I’ve written about gratitude before, but you can’t be thankful too often or too much.  There is always, always something to be thankful for.  Today, a friend’s father’s life literally hangs in the balance because of an accident.  And, just like that, we remember to bring awareness, love and grace to those that we hold dear. Today, I am thankful for so much.

I am thankful for..

  • The health and happiness of my friends and family
  • The job that puts a roof over my head and healthcare in my life
  • The doctors who have kept me well over the years
  • Friends I can lean on, laugh with, cry with, and just be with
  • The person who cuts in front of me and stops at the red light, for despite my haste, they may have saved my life
  • My disease because it has made me very aware of my health, and I act accordingly
  • Chocolate (I’m also not thankful for chocolate)
  • Animals because they teach us so much about life and love
  • The infinite capacity of our hearts to hold and give love
  • Pumpkin flavored anything
  • The men and women who fight for our individual freedoms every, single day of their lives
  • Modern medicine
  • Ancient medicine
  • Comfy pajamas
  • The $5,000 HVAC repair because it reminds me that I’m fortunate enough to have a comfortable home
  • I don’t have to walk 10 miles for clean water
  • I have enough food
  • The teachers who taught me to read
  • Yoga and meditation

I am thankful that I have too many things to be thankful for to list in this post.  My gratitude is bittersweet as my heart goes out to my friend and his family today while they are suspended in time, waiting for words of hope.

“Everyday, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can.”  – Dalai Lama

What are you thankful for today?

  1. So beautiful, Lisa. These kinds of lists are so helpful to remind us of how good we have it! When I was having a terrible time at work in the depths of the recession, I posted a list of why I was grateful by my front door so that I could read it every morning before heading to work. It helped tremendously! Today, I’m grateful for the opportunity to be of service. That, and pumpkin flavored everything 🙂
